GERMAN ABBREVIATIONS

Because of the character of the major sections of the ITS archive, it is not surprising that certain abbreviations appear numerous times in the sources and descriptions of materials of similar nature. The following are some of the most common German abbreviations (with their English equivalents) found in the inventory:

AEL (Arbeitserziehungslager): labor/work education camp
AG (Aktiengesellschaft): public corporation
AL (Arbeitslager): work camp
AOK (Allgemeine Ortskrankenkasse): public health insurance company
BKK (Betriebskrankenkasse): company health insurance funds
DP (displaced person)
DRK (Deutsches Rotes Kreuz): German Red Cross
e.V. (eingetragener Verein): registered association
Fa. (Firma): firm
Fr. (Frau): Mrs.
Gmbh (Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung): limited liability company
IKRK (Internationales Komitee vom Roten Kreuz)
ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross)
KG. (Kommanditgesellschaft): limited partnership
Kgf. (Kriegsgefangene): prisoners of war
KL or KZ (Konzentrationslager): concentration camp
LK (Landkreis): administrative district
pol. (politisch): political
REIMAHG (Flugzeugwerke Reichsmarschall Hermann Göring): Aircraft works of Reichsmarschall Herman Göring
RSHA Reichssicherheitshauptamt (Reich Security Main Office)
SK (Stadtkreis): urban district
SS-WVHA (SS Wirtschafts- und Verwaltungshauptamt): SS Economic and Administration Main Office
