How can I view the rights restricted videos not yet online?
You can use the online catalog to find textual descriptions of films that are not yet digitized or rights restricted. Make a note of the film numbers, beginning with RG-60. Contact staff at 202.488.6104 or filmvideo@ushmm.org to schedule an appointment to visit the USHMM to view the footage in VHS or DVD format. If you do not find what you are looking for online, please ask.

I found an error in the catalog. How can I fix it?
We make every effort to ensure the accuracy of information in this database. However, if you find an error, contact staff at filmvideo@ushmm.org to correct the data.

Can you tell me what the abbreviations in the shot description field refer to?
Abbreviations describe the types of camera angles or shots and may be plural, e.g. medium shots would be MSs.

The following are used in combination with the above:

How can I order copies of historical footage?
The Archive is not equipped or staffed to supply copies of archival materials directly to users. If footage is in the public domain and has no rights restrictions, we can facilitate duplication of master material via a local video studio at the requestor's expense. Make a note of the following information:

Films that are not in the public domain must be cleared with the rights holder by the requestor before duplication. For more information, read the procedures for duplication or contact staff at 202.488.6104 or filmvideo@ushmm.org.

What are the system requirements for playing videos?
To play videos through your browser, your system must meet the following requirements:

The video keeps stopping while I'm watching it. How do I fix that?
If a video doesn't play continuously it may be due to your connection speed. We recommend a broadband connection with 500+ Kbps for the best viewing experience. If your connection speed is less than 500 Kbps, we suggest that you stop the video and wait until the entire video finishes buffering before playing the video. It is also possible that your video download speed is slow or inconsistent. In this case, you can try pausing the video until the entire stream is downloaded, then play the video.

Why can’t I hear the audio when I’m watching a video?
Many of the films are silent. To make sure that you hear sound while watching videos, please check the volume controls on your computer. Also, be sure to increase the volume on other conventional video players on your computer, such as Quicktime or Windows Media. This may have an effect on your computer’s master volume levels. Next, check to see if your system meets the requirements for running video. If the video still isn’t working properly try troubleshooting with a different browser. Also test the audio on multiple videos.

My video is taking a long time to play. Is something wrong?
Playback experience is different for every user because of the variation in connection speeds. If the video is very large (in some cases, the videos are more than one hour in running time) it may take a long time to play.

I have found some old film – what should I do with it?
If you think the film might be of interest to the USHMM, please contact staff at filmvideo@ushmm.org. We are happy to advise on the relevance of any film or videotape to our collection. If you also hold related items such as film cameras, diaries, or posters, please mention these when making contact.
