Biography / History:

More information on the young Sinti girl: Settela (her Gypsy name may have been Blieta) Steinbach was one of the 245 Dutch Sinti who perished in Auschwitz/Birkenau. Settela was killed less than three months after her arrival in one the five gas chambers of Birkenau on either July 31 or August 1, 1944, the date of the liquidation of Birkenau's Zigeunerlager - Gypsy Camp. Settela and the other Sinti had been incarcerated in Camp Westerbork less than three days before being deported to Birkenau. Settela's last, and world renowned, picture was taken on May 19, 1944 moments before the door on her was bolted and locked. For more information about the plight of Dutch Sinti and Roma, consult the following text: "Settela" by Aad Wagenaar published by "De Arbeiderspers, Singel 262, Amsterdam" (in Dutch). Also consult the documentary film "Settela" by Dutch filmmaker Cherry Duyns (1994). The film identifies Settela Steinbach who peers out of an opening in the cattle-car on the train leaving Westerbork (Holland) for Belsen, in an oft-reproduced image of the Holocaust. The filmmaker also locates the photographer (a Jewish prisoner).
